ASSIGNMENT one |
This idea explores the usage of scaling and positioning as well as meeting the brief with its justified layout. I really like this idea as its popular purpose for being a headline typeface is being used to its potential. The wording speaks out, with a subtle paragraph of information being placed along the bottom. The combination of different greys whites and blacks creates a subtle and artistic design towards the audiences. Also the positive and negative space within the design is explored with as I have designed the balance between the space within the letters.

As I progressed with my design concepts I started to collaborate and combine my design works into one so that I started to use all the trail and errors from my previous designs and put them into practice. With this design I wanted to explore the technique of imagery and how a typeface can create a more visual piece. "Designers have a great impact" is a quote that I thought of, this little statement was something that I wanted to include within my type specimen sheet as it provides a little quirkiness and character to the concept as opposed to the word 'Impact'. The characters create an intricate pattern and it was only being used as an experiment to how the design would look.
This design concept explores and justifies the usage of angles and perspective of the type specimen sheet. The way on which I combined and signified the ranges of typeface sizes is something that I have to consider if I want to meet the brief. I have maximized the potential of white space within my working area and I have played around with scaling and positioning. I like the way on which I presented the measurement comparison of impacts individual letters as this reveals to the audiences its similarities and differences within its lettering format. However as much as I do like the scaling within this type specimen sheet I do feel however that it needs to go back to its clean and justified look.
Development within design concept is significant as it allows the designers to experiment and explore ranges visual techniques, such as scaling, positioning, and layouts. Also because this is a type specimen sheet I can look into different character and paragraph styles within typography such as leading, kerning, stokes, and sizing of fonts. This particular concept portrays a fixed and justified layout, with its clean and tidy look; perhaps I need to experiment on a larger scale as the white space is not being fully explored.
Learning the attributes and characteristics or impact is significant as I had to understand the regulations within the boundaries of typography. For example I learnt that impact has a high x height, its ascenders are short and its descenders are shorter. The kerning is consistent as its bold lettering makes it easy for audiences to notice as impact is well known as a headline font.
The initial stages of any project starts of with researching and understanding the concept of the brief in order to progress. Tamye Riggs's 'Classic Typography for Contemporary Design' published in 2009 gave me significant information about the typeface 'Impact'. I acknowledged the context of impact and that it was designed in 1965 by advertising designer Geoffrey Lee in Sheffield.
Helvetica the documentary allowed me to appreciate and consider the font around me in day to day life. To understand the ethics of Helvetica and the reasons to why companies use the typeface in their design works. By appreciating the font it allowed me to learn about the methods and means within typeface such as leaning about kerning and leading. This documentary was very helpful as I can know look more into depth with other typefaces.

BriefTraditionally, the purpose of a type specimen sheet was to provide the designer with visual examples of how a specific font performed in a variety of point sizes, weights and leading measurements. My typeface was Impact, and I am required to design an A2 black, white and grey type specimen sheet. My poster must include the name of the font, the name of the designer, the date/ era of design, the classification and the characteristics of the typeface.
