ASSIGNMENT three |
Once all the coats were sprayed I finalised the spraying by adding a coat of gloss which improves the quality of the colours that I applied. The box as well was done by a stencil as I sprayed a purple and yellow on the top to represent UKIP's interpretation of the union jack. Overall I think that from looking at this I can identify that it is Nigel Farage for one the alternative union jack, and once you open the box it portrays a man in a suit holding a pint glass of beer with the subtle house style of UKIP. I really enjoyed this assignment as it allowed me to work with different mediums and combine materials and process together to create a mixed media 3 dimensional and promotional piece that identifies the means of Nigel Farage.

Once the 'N' and 'F' were finished in the workshop we glued the two letters together. I then used a range of different sand papers and I sanded down the letters to make them smooth in order for the spray paint to cover. A spray booth set up was then needed in order to spray paint the letters. Health and safety had to be taken into consideration, and so a spray mask, an apron, and a cardboard cutout so that the spray paint wouldn't stain anything other then the letters and excess cardboard. A black spray paint would then give the letters a base coating which means that it would make any spray coated on top of the base spray more bolder with a clean finish. To give the letters numerous amount of coats was needed as this needed to be done properly. After the base spray was applied I then sued masking tape and stencils to spray the multiple colours on top (e.e white spray for the shirt, purple spray for the tie, and a peachy pink for the hand). This took some time as time taken for the spray to dry was needed in order to spray the second coat on.
The making of the letters had to be taken consideration of as a good quality piece of manufacturing could help increase the quality and build of the overall letters. I developed the shape of the 'F' on illustrator and then sent it through to the laser cutter. I used thick MDF wood as this would give the 'F' a solid and sturdy structure. The 'F' would also need to show off a hand holding a pint glass so I needed to create and make the shape of a hand. I initially cut out a smooth block and attached it onto the 'F' with PVA glue and clamped it. Once the glue was dry I then used a range of needle files and sand paper to create the fingers of the hand to make it more realistic looking.
The second box mockup signifies more of the letters and how they would look if I were to realistically make them. The box concept also allows me to look at how the letters are going to fit into the box, in this design the letters side by side to one another, however I feel as if I need to play around with scaling and positioning of the letters. The flap in the middle users to interact with the box, and it also increases the perspective on how you look at the letters, as the flap hides one letter, and to see the other one you have to flip it in order to see the other letter. I like this idea because of how unique it looks as this is not a standard box however I think the box opening is a little too sophisticated and complexed so I think I will decide to go with the first concept.
Here is a mockup of the box which will hold the letters, it symbolises the union jack in an alternative version that represents UKIP I thought this would be relevant as Nigel Farage represents UKIP. The box also a piece of transparent plastic at the front of the lid as audiences are easily able to identify the letters within the box.
From one of my designs I sketches this one which portrays Nigel Farage drinking a pint as he enjoys a pint of beer. Its iconic and symbolic as the suit and the pint glass portrays power and class yet the pint glass can symbolise success, which Nigel Farage has as the UK Independence party has grown to become a top contender in the battle of polls in the UK election. UKIP's purple and yellow house style colour can be used to identification as audience would recognise.
These sketches are more design ideas on what the design could look like on the front of the typeface. As UKIP are wanting to come out of the EU I thought to include some relevance to the NO EU statement from UKIP. Also another idea shows the ratio to the amount of illigal immigrants that come into the UK in a more graphical design. And on another design I thought to perhaps relate to Nigel Farage's German wife which is a significant factor. Overall I need to source out what the most significant aspect of Nigel Farage is and develop on that aspect.
The initial design idea generation needed to come from the research that I took of Nigal Farage and what sort of character he is. The main aspect of Nigel Farage has to be the relation between him and UKIP, he is the face of UKIP and so I think that there has to be a visual relation between the two. These sketches portray the typeface that UKIP have used in their advertising. 'Franklin Gothic extra bold' is the most similar typeface and so I expanded on that; as this font is bold and thick it would make it easier for me to put a design on the top.
For our random celebrity I was given Nigel Farage which is a lead member of the UK Independence party (UKIP). I needed to do some initial background research to understand Nigel Farage as a character and what he represents. He's 50 years old and he was born near Kent, he has a German wife and has 4 children. He joined the UK Independence party in 2010 and worked he was up to the role position he is currently in. In May 2013 UKIP won over 140 seats and averaged at 25% of the vote in the wards where it was standing, therefore went to a pub and drank a pint in front of the paparazzi, as a symbol of celebration and also a signification of the traditional English ecosystem that he believes in. UKIP want to exit the EU and to tighten up their boarders and reduce immigration. UKIP have been slatted as racists by numerous amount of audiences, Nigel Farage has also been given death threats as well as being involved in a plane crash in December 2010.

BriefFor this brief you will be working in pairs and will receive a randomly selected name of a celebrity or well known person. Whatever the opinion of the celebrity, their character is undeniable and larger than life. Your task is to take their two initials and design and make 3 - dimensional letters which amplify and reflect the essential elements of the subject's character and personality.
Your starting point should be to select a typeface, through research which you must evidence, which suits your celebrity and provide a basis for whatever design treatments you choose. |
