The Deputy Commissioner of the New York State Department of Commerce William Doyle hired advertising agency Wells Rich Greene to develop a marketing campaign for New York State. Doyle then recruited Milton Glaser who at this point was already a graphic designer. The placement of the logo on a plain white t-shirt sold in the city widely circulated the appearance of the image, making it a commonly recognizable symbol. Even though this piece of graphic design wasn’t intended for it to become a product it reflects how a piece of design can become a small trend to a recognisable global icon. I love new York is now one of the most top selling t shirts ever designed, as it is seen as a tourist souvenir to those that visit New York. The logo itself is the selling technique used as those that wear the shirt, wear it with pride and achievement that you’ve been to the great city of New York, and so that convinces other consumers to go to New York as well which then redirects more money into the state.

bRIEFYour task is to work as a team to gather information about the theme 'capitalism and consumerism'. Each theme will form a proposal for graphic design to support a touring exhibition. Each of you will be given a period in history to research and you will contribute a piece of writing that will form a publication produced by your group. This publication will be produced as a piece of print and as an interactive PDF. capitalism & consumerismWho or what does graphic design serve? Graphic designers may concentrate on facilitating communication, enabling users to understand things, yet this ability can be utilised to sell things and to persuade others. As such it plays an important role within the capitalist system helping to
create demand for commodities, and perhaps to engage in. To use a phrase discussed by Herman and Chomsky 1995 'manufacturing consent'. From the public relations of Edward Bernays, to the hidden persuaders of Vance Packard 1961 to century of the self, the role of graphic design and advertising as a support mechanism for capitalism and consumerism has been an enduring source of debate.
