ideology
Planned obsolescence is the main aspect across all of my responses as it is heavily linked towards my theme 'capitalism and consumerism'. The ideology of not just the big corporations but across most institutions are designing products that have a shorter life span then intended so that consumers buy more quantities of the same product if not a newer product. These products range

widely from phones and other technology devices to the basic essentials such as pens. The light bulb conspiracy has been an enduring on going source as products are intentionally being made to last shorter. Thomas Edison is the inventor of the light bulb which has been one of the most successful inventions of technology. When light bulbs were being sold across an

international scale and so they decided to reduce the light bulbs life span from 2500 hours to 1000 hours, this would mean that consumers would buy more therefore falling into the consumer consumption. My touring exhibition main purpose would be to create the awareness to all audiences about how you should approach products and not be sold by how it looks but by how its been

reviewed. Our capitalist society is being reinforced by consumerism as commodity fetishisms and false consciousness enables designers to create create this consumer culture that we live in today. Pluralists say that audiences have a choice on what to buy, however a marxist would say that audiences are so manipulated that they do not know the ideologies behind the commodities.

initial Brainstorming |
planned obsolescence |
From my initial research of the theme I thought to brainstorm some ideas on what defines capitalism and consumerism. I gathered that what defines it most is marketing and advertising, and how it relates to consumer goods and the ideology of wanting and needing things.
|
After the initial brainstorming I started to think what response I would want to portray and represent. Planned obsolescence took an interest to me as I thought it was interesting to elaborate on the theory of consumer culture and to ask the significant questions to why consumer culture has grown and how the industry plays a part.
